The First Behçet’s Center in the USA is in New York!

Hospital for Joint Diseases
Behçet’s Syndrome
Evaluation, Treatment & Research Center
Open in March, 2005 in New York City, the Behçet's Center is a welcome addition to the NYU Hospital for Joint Diseases and our Medical Board Doctor, Yusuf Yazici, is the Doc for the job...
If you were fortunate enough to hear him speak at the 2003 National Medical Conference, you know how knowledgeable about Behçet’s Disease Dr. Yazici is. His father treats hundreds of Behçet's patients in Turkey and it is no doubt that Dr. Yazici is on his way to operating a very successful Center here in the United States.

Aim:
The aim is to establish a center to focus efforts to diagnose and treat Behçet’s Syndrome, and lead research in this area. The center is dedicated to Behçet’s Syndrome and would be able to evaluate sizeable numbers of Behçet’s patients and bring together physicians with different areas of interest within vasculitis and specifically Behçet’s Syndrome under one roof. Most rheumatologists and primary care physicians have 1-2 patients with Behçet’s Syndrome and because of the rarity of the disease cannot accumulate large enough numbers to participate or conduct clinical trials of Behçet’s Syndrome.
The center would be able to conduct and participate in clinical trials in understanding the pathophysiology of Behçet’s Syndrome and evaluating treatment options and be one of the leading centers in North America.

Methods:
-
A dedicated Behçet’s Syndrome clinic will be started.
-
Collaborations with Dermatology and Ophthalmology departments will
make a team approach possible in treating Behçet’s Syndrome patients.
-
This will also help prevent delays in evaluation and diagnosis of
Behçet’s Syndrome.
-
Future plans:
-
Bring speakers for local programs for both physicians and patients.
-
Help ABDA in organizing events for patients.
-
Attend the National Behçet’s Syndrome Conference.
-
Plan and hold yearly Behçet’s Syndrome meeting/course.
