The 2012 Walk for Behcet's-MI will take place on August 26, 2012, at Civic Center Park in Madison Heights, MI. Registration begins at 10 AM. Walking is not required but your support and presence are vitally important to our cause! Join us at the park for a fun filled event with music, raffle prizes, games, face painting, crafts, refreshments and great company. Bring your family, your friends and your pets (furry friends are welcome at the park) and participate in the crusade to raise awareness and funds for Behcet's Disease.
Registration is a tax-deductible donation of $15 per adult and teen walker (if received by August 1) and $20 after. There will be no charge for children 12 and under. Registered walkers will receive a t-shirt at the Walk (while supplies last). Participants will be able to purchase books, ABDA products and much more, while browsing through our ABDA store and gaining important information about Behçet's Disease.
Behcet's Disease is a rare, painful, debilitating disease. It's considered an auto-immune disorder. There are approximately 15,000-20,000 diagnosed cases of the disease in the U.S. The exact cause of the disease is unknown. It is a form of vasculitis and may affect all organs. A number of Behcet's patients suffer from ulcerations of the oral and vaginal mucosae, arthritis, hearing loss, and may develop uveitis and blindness. In some cases, Behcet's Disease may involve the central nervous system.
The ABDA works to provide support to patients with Behcet's Disease and their families and to educate the medical community. The organization promotes and participates in research and aims to create awareness in order to help sufferers obtain an early diagnosis and avoid complications of the disease. The goal of the 2012 Walk for Behcet's- MI, is to increase awareness about Behcet's Disease, while raising critically needed funding. Funds from the Walk will be allocated to support the ABDA's 2013 National Conference on Behcet's Disease.
The 2012 Walk for Behcet's Disease-MI event is sponsored by XOMA Corporation. Located in Berkeley, CA, XOMA Corporation develops novel treatments to help patients and their caregivers address serious unmet medical needs. One of XOMA's products, XOMA 052, is currently in clinical development as an anti-inflammatory treatment for Behcet's uveitis and for diabetes. Learn more about XOMA at http://www.XOMA.com.
Registered walkers may participate individually or form a team. Walkers may walk the 2 block easy stroll or sit underneath one of the shady pavilions and cheer others on. Many Behçet's patients and their families will walk together, so let's show our support by walking with them or for them at this event! Please invite your friends and family to join us as we walk for Behcet's Disease. Remember, you DON'T HAVE TO ATTEND the walk to help but your presence would be greatly appreciated. There's power in numbers! If you are unable to join us, you can register and collect donations for Behcet's Disease on your own personal web page. We'll send you a Walk T-shirt if you collect donations!
